Who can perform asbestos testing in NY?

You can’t hire just anybody as an asbestos inspector. You need licensed asbestos professionals like us!

In New York, it’s illegal to hire untrained individuals or unlicensed firms for work involving Asbestos-Containing Materials (ACMs), including:

  • Inspections and testing

  • Management plans and reports

  • ACP-5 form issuance for renovation or demolition permits

  • Any activities that may disturb asbestos materials

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), OSHA, and the New York State Department of Labor all have strict requirements for the certification, training, and licensing of asbestos professionals. In New York City, additional regulations apply under the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), especially for ACP5 compliance.

Hiring certified experts ensures the safety of your property, your health, and compliance with all local and federal laws.

What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals made up of fine, durable fibers that are resistant to heat, fire, and many chemicals. Because of these properties, asbestos was widely used in construction materials—such as insulation, floor tiles, roofing, cement, and pipe coverings—especially throughout the 20th century.

However, asbestos is now known to be highly hazardous to health. When materials containing asbestos are disturbed, they can release microscopic fibers into the air. If inhaled, these fibers can become lodged in the lungs and cause serious illnesses, including:

  • Asbestosis (a chronic lung disease)

  • Lung cancer

  • Mesothelioma (a rare and aggressive cancer of the lining of the lungs or abdomen)

Due to these health risks, asbestos use is now heavily regulated, and in many countries—including the U.S.—its handling, testing, and removal must be done by certified professionals following strict safety protocols.

Where is asbestos?

Asbestos was commonly used in construction materials throughout much of the 20th century, especially in buildings built before the 1980s. It may still be present in many homes, apartments, and commercial properties.

Common locations where asbestos may be found include:

  • Flooring: Vinyl tiles, linoleum backings, and adhesives

  • Ceilings: Popcorn ceilings, acoustic tiles, and spray-applied insulation

  • Walls: Plaster, joint compound, and textured coatings

  • Pipes & Ducts: Insulation around hot water pipes, boilers, and HVAC systems

  • Roofing & Siding: Shingles, felt paper, and cement board siding

  • Basements: Old furnace insulation and pipe wrap

  • Electrical: Wiring insulation and old fuse boxes

If these materials are intact and undisturbed, they may not pose an immediate risk. However, during renovations or demolition, they can release harmful asbestos fibers into the air. That’s why it's critical to have a professional asbestos inspection and testing done before starting any work.

How long does it take?

The timeframe for asbestos inspection and testing depends on the size of the property, the number of areas being assessed, and the urgency of your project—but most residential inspections can be completed within 1 to 2 hours on-site.

After the inspection, collected samples are sent to a certified laboratory for analysis. Lab testing typically takes 1 to 2 business days, depending on whether PLM (Polarized Light Microscopy) or TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) is used and whether rush analysis is requested.

For projects that require an ACP5 form, the completed report and form are generally available within 1 to 2 business days after the inspection. Rush services available upon request.

We understand that many construction or renovation projects are time-sensitive, and we work quickly to provide accurate results without delays. If you're facing a tight deadline, contact us about expedited options.

What is a ACP-5 form?

An ACP-5 form is required by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for many renovation and demolition projects. It confirms that either no asbestos is present in the work area or that asbestos-containing materials won’t be disturbed.

At DJ Group Asbestos, we’re licensed asbestos investigators who provide:

  • On-site inspections

  • Certified sample collection and lab testing (PLM and TEM)

  • Fast ACP5 form issuance to keep your project compliant and on schedule

Expert Advice

If you suspect your property may contain asbestos, the most important thing to do is not disturb it. Asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) can remain harmless when intact—but cutting, drilling, or renovating without proper testing can release dangerous fibers into the air.

Our role as certified asbestos investigators is to help you identify and assess potential asbestos hazards before you begin any work. We provide professional site inspections, safe sample collection, and certified laboratory testing using methods like PLM (Polarized Light Microscopy) and TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) to accurately detect asbestos in building materials.

Our thorough reports and ACP-5 form services will ensure you have the clear documentation required for NYC DEP compliance and next steps, whether you're filing for a permit or hiring an abatement contractor.

Before you renovate or demolish, contact us first. Our inspections are fast, compliant, and essential to protecting your safety—and your project timeline.
